Finding Your Foundation Shade Online (Without Guessing)
Foundation is the one product people are most nervous to buy online, and for good reason — get the shade wrong and you end up with a line at your jaw or a product that oxidizes into the wrong tone by noon. You don't need to guess. Here's how to actually narrow it down from a screen.
Start with your undertone, not just how light or dark you are
Two people with the same depth of skin can need completely different shades if one leans warm (gold/yellow) and the other leans cool (pink/blue) or neutral. Check the inside of your wrist in natural light: greenish veins usually mean warm undertone, bluish/purple veins usually mean cool, and if you can't tell, you're likely neutral.
Match to a shade family, then fine-tune
Our Natural Finish Foundation line is organized by undertone family, not just light-to-dark, which makes this much easier:
- Warm (Light-Medium): Seashell, Porcelain, Peach
- Warm (Medium-Deep): Oak, Spiced Honey, Toasted, Rich Caramel
- Neutral (Light-Medium): Warm Nude, Penny, Mile Beach
- Neutral (Medium-Deep): Bronze Night, Brunette, Maple, Amber
Find your undertone family first, then pick the depth that's closest to your jawline color in daylight, not indoor lighting.
When in doubt, size down your commitment
If you're between two shades, the safer online bet is usually going slightly lighter — foundation oxidizes (darkens slightly) after a few minutes on skin, and it's easier to warm up a shade with bronzer than to lighten one that's too deep.
Don't forget the finish you actually want
Shade is half the equation. If you want buildable, natural coverage, that's the Natural Finish line. If you want a powder you can build from sheer to full and set makeup with later, our Dual Blend Powder Foundation — now including Malibu and Mesa — works wet or dry depending on the coverage you want that day.
Still unsure?
Message us your undertone and closest shade from another brand you've worn before, and we'll help you match it — no guessing required.
