Hyaluronic Acid 101: What It Does and How to Layer It With Other Actives

Hyaluronic acid shows up on more ingredient labels than almost anything else in skincare — and for once, the hype is largely earned. Here's what it actually does, and how to use it well rather than just piling it on.

What Hyaluronic Acid Actually Does

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant — meaning it draws moisture in and holds onto it, rather than adding oil or actively changing skin's texture the way an acid exfoliant does. Your skin already produces it naturally, but that production slows with age and environmental stress, which is why supplementing it topically became so popular.

The visible effect is usually described as a plumper, more hydrated look — fine lines from dehydration appear softer, and skin generally looks more supple within days rather than weeks.

A Common Mistake: Applying It Wrong

Hyaluronic acid needs moisture in the air (or a moisturizer sealing it in) to actually hold onto. Applied to bone-dry skin in a dry climate with nothing over it, it can occasionally pull moisture from deeper skin layers instead of the air — leaving skin feeling tighter, not more hydrated.

The fix is simple: apply it to slightly damp skin, then follow with a moisturizer to lock it in. Never leave it as the last, uncovered step.

How to Layer It With Other Actives

  • With Vitamin C: A safe, popular combination — apply Vitamin C first, hyaluronic acid after.
  • With Glycolic Acid or other exfoliants: Hyaluronic acid pairs well here too, often applied after an exfoliating step to help offset any temporary dryness.
  • With Retinol: Many people apply hyaluronic acid first to buffer retinol's potential dryness, though always patch test new combinations.

Choosing a Formula

Not all hyaluronic acid products are equal — molecular weight affects how deeply it penetrates, and formulas that combine multiple weights tend to hydrate more evenly across skin's surface and slightly below it.

Our Hyaluronic Acid Serum was formulated with exactly this kind of layered hydration in mind, and pairs naturally with our Hyaluronic Moisturizer to seal everything in — the sealing step that makes the serum actually work as intended.
